The Environmental Education Association of Washington (EEAW) has recognized the Magnuson Outdoor Learning Laboratory (MOLL) as an exemplary education program. The program received the 2006-2007 Community Catalyst Award for providing innovative, community-based environmental education.
The award was presented on the final day of the EEAW Conference, held this year in Seattle. Presenting the award were EEAW Executive Director Abby Ruskey and President Frank Hein. On hand to receive the award were Kathryn Kelsey with Seattle Public Schools, Javier Chewning with EarthCorps, and Tim Stetter with the Burke Museum.
In its first three years, nearly 500 MOLL students have given almost 2000 hours of community service, removed a half-acre of invasive plants, and sharpened their science skills through a range of field experiments.
In thanking EEAW for the award, Kathryn Kelsey wrote, "the Community Catalyst Award affirms the importance of this work and lends inspiration for developing and improving the experience for students"
