The Burke recently created a computerized mapping system or Geographic Information System (GIS) database of information to assist with NAGPRA consultations. This limited access, secure GIS database includes the locations of sites where NAGPRA archaeological cultural items now housed at the Burke were originally found, photos of these items and associated documentation. This database also includes maps created by ethnographers and historians that outline tribal cultural and treaty boundaries for Washington, Oregon and Alaska.

The following tribes have been provided a copy of the Burke NAGPRA GIS database, and trained in its use:

The Burke Museum has an ongoing program for testing artifacts in our collections that may have been treated with pesticides and other dangerous chemicals as preservatives in the past. Results of testing are made available to claimant tribes upon request.
