Coffea arabica, you bring us to our knees. You are the little bean
that came to world domination, the most popular beverage
behind water.
— Kristin Dizon, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Coffee: The World in Your Cup explores how coffee — one of the world's most widely traded commodities — affects cultures, economies, and environments around the world. Engaging maps, photos, text, selected artifacts, and audiovisual presentations illuminate the fascinating world of stories behind the coffee we drink and enable visitors to become informed consumers. Visitors learn about coffee's origins in Africa, its methods of production, and its impact on the environment — from backyard birds to global climate change. They encounter people who produce our coffee and the efforts to ensure that they earn a fair wage for their work. Coffee also addresses the botany of coffee, the effects of caffeine on human health, and the art and science of producing a perfect cup.

Coffee: The World in Your Cup was organized by the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture at the University of Washington, Seattle, in collaboration with a panel of advisors from the University of Washington, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, Seattle University, Seattle Audubon Society, and the Specialty Coffee Industry.
