Skidegate Haida House Models and Poles for the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago , 1893

Robin K. Wright is currently researching the set of Skidegate Haida House and Pole models made in 1892 for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The 29 model houses, most with frontal poles, and 15 freestanding model poles were commissioned by James Deans in 1892 for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition.

The location of 14 of the model houses is currently unknown, and we are seeking your assistance in locating them. If you have any information about the current location of these house models, please contact Dr. Wright at: wright@u.washington.edu

This is a collaborative project with the Haida Gwaii Museum in Skidegate, B.C., and the Field Museum in Chicago, to develop a traveling exhibit of the house models and document them in a book. This research is partially funded by the UW Royalty Research Fund, a Canadian Embassy Senior Fellowship, and a National Endowment for the Humanities Exhibit Planning Grant.
