An intensive 15-credit, two-quarter program on the concepts and applications of successful management. During this program, which meets two nights per week for two quarters, students gain a basic grounding in management theory as it applies to new ventures and existing organizations. After acquiring a basic understanding in nine core business areas, students develop and present a comprehensive business plan for a new venture, or conduct a business analysis of an existing firm or strategic business unit.

Admission Requirements:
Individuals who do not have a four-year degree and undergraduates may enroll in the program provided permission is obtained in advance from the instructor.

This eight-month evening program provides advanced training, from an overview of major U.S. commercial property trends and patterns to property management operations, market analysis, entitlement and permitting, to legal and taxation issues.

Admission Requirements:
Completion of at least two years of college; and two years of experience in commercial real estate, or in a related field such as architecture, construction, law or planning. Company sponsorship often strengthens a participant's motivation to succeed in the program. Sponsored applicants are usually ranked highly in the selection process.

This five-month evening program focuses on e-commerce business and management strategies needed for success in today's Internet business environment. The program, which explores such issues as key business models, effective Web marketing strategies, and site design, development and maintenance, provides a framework for starting an Internet business or leading a successful e-commerce initiative within an existing business. Participants develop a business plan that is appropriate for an e-business start-up or internal corporate project.

A business degree or two to four years of managerial experience in product development, finance, sales, marketing, or a related area; and Basic Web proficiency.

Integrated Marketing Communications

This intensive nine-month evening course of study integrates all elements of marketing communications, including marketing, advertising, public relations and promotion. The program is updated each year to incorporate the latest innovations in this field.

Admission Requirements:
(a) A bachelor's degree and three years of work experience in marketing or a marketing communications-related discipline, or (b) two years of college and four years of experience, or (c) five years of experience without college. Applicants should be comfortable with business concepts such as income, expenses, calculation of percentages, and profitability. Although proficiency in this area will not be tested, participants with stronger quantitative abilities will benefit most from this program.

This program is designed for professionals who want to acquire or enhance their project management skills. Experienced project managers and team members who want to sharpen their project management skills will benefit from this program.

Admission Requirements:
Either a baccalaureate degree and two years of work experience, an associate of arts degree and four years of work experience, or six years of work experience. The work experience can be in construction, banking, engineering, computer-related fields, utilities, aerospace, government agencies, or in any other type of organization in which project management skills can be applied. Applicants do not need prior project management work experience, but those with such experience have preference.

 

Modality:
Autumn 2001: classroom format in Seattle, Bellevue, Everett or Federal Way; distance learning, with group sessions in Bellevue. Courses in the classroom-based format meet two evenings per week over a nine-week period in each quarter. The Certificate Program for the Technical Trainer, designed for technical trainers and training specialists, gives participants an opportunity to acquire and enhance conceptual knowledge and practical skills.

Modality:

The Certificate Program in Technical Writing and Editing gives participants hands-on experience and necessary knowledge for entering or advancing in the high-growth technical communication field.

Admission Requirements:
A baccalaureate degree from a four-year, accredited institution, or completion of at least two years of college, combined with a minimum of two years of work experience in the technical communication field.

Note: Before beginning the program, participants must have intermediate-level word processing skills in a word processing program. During the program, participants must have access to a computer for word processing papers. Participants also must be able to download and print materials from the Web.

Training Specialist

This eight-month program is designed to prepare those who have experience in organizational training to meet the highest standards of professionalism. Participants expand their knowledge with the latest information in the training field.

Admission Requirements:
Two years experience in the corporate/organizational training field. Applicants without this experience need to successfully complete Introduction to Organizational Training. Completion of at least two years of college.

Modality:
Classes are held on Saturdays at UW Educational Outreach in Bellevue. Two or three sessions may be held at a different location on the UW campus in Seattle, on dates and at times that may vary from the published schedule, depending on computer lab and guest presenters' availability. Courses require time outside the classroom, including reading and/or video viewing assignments, and faculty-directed field activities.

Courses in this certificate program cover all the major elements of C programming, with emphasis on developing practical knowledge through assignments. Students gain skills writing, compiling and running functions, as well as debugging and executing ANSI C programs.

The Certificate Program in C Programming has an admissions process to ensure that students begin the program at the appropriate level. Each student's educational background and professional experience will determine whether he or she should begin the certificate program with C Programming: Introduction or C Programming: Introduction and Intermediate. (C Programming: Introduction and Intermediate is offered in a distance learning format; C Programming: Introduction is not.)

This program covers common and advanced features of C++ programming, including object-oriented programming and recent additions to the language. Students learn specific ways to improve designs and implementations.

Admission Requirements:
The C++ Programming Certificate Program has been designed for students with the following qualifications:

  • High school education or GED
  • PC or Mac literacy (e.g., use of e-mail and directories and understanding of operating systems)
  • One of the following:
    • Foundations of C++ course and one to two years recent programming experience in any high-level programming language.
    • C Programming Certificate
    • Knowledge equivalent to the C certificate, gained through one to two years of recent experience in designing and developing C programs of moderate size
  • Solid knowledge of basic data structures (arrays, link lists, pointers)

Washington State's Employment Security Department projects that employment in high technology sectors will double by the year 2005. Accompanying this phenomenal growth in the Puget Sound region is an ongoing, critical problem: a lack of skilled technology professionals needed to design, implement, and manage the computer-based enterprises that will drive commerce and education into the 21st century.

In direct response, the Department of Computing & Software Systems (CSS) at UW Bothell and the Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) at UW Seattle have collaborated to offer an innovative solution to the shortage of information technology workers: seven evening and distance learning certificate programs in high-demand, computer-related areas. These programs train working professionals to meet the technical and business requirements of expanding technology fields.

This nine-month, evening certificate program provides an introduction to general database management concepts, system design, development, implementation and administration.

Admission Requirement:
Applicants should have at least four years of undergraduate education, technical training, or equivalent experience; familiarity with a programming language; and a basic understanding of data processing concepts.

Modality:
The Certificate Program in Database Management will be offered in two locations in 2001-2002. Classes will meet one evening per week in Seattle or Bellevue. Seattle classes will begin in October 2001. Bellevue classes will begin in January 2002.

Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering

This distance learning certificate program offers students the opportunity to enter the exciting field of electrical engineering without being required to come to campus.

Admission Requirements:
Students must have at least one year of college experience, including fulfillment of all course prerequisites, prior to acceptance in the certificate program. In certain cases, prerequisites for EE235 and 371 may be completed while enrolled in EE 215 or 233.

International students must meet one of the following English language proficiency requirements:

  • TOEFL score of at least 500 (or 173 computer-based)
  • TOEIC score of at least 650
  • IELTS score of at least 6.0

Java 2 Enterprise Programming

Students first learn to think as object-oriented programmers. They learn the syntax and basic features of the Java programming language, and how to write simple Java programs. They make more extensive use of class libraries and gain more experience using the language in intermediate and advanced courses.

Completion of at least two years of college. Two or more years of experience with computers, including experience with a variety of software applications relevant to digital interactive multimedia. Relevant transferable skills including, but not limited to, ability to work creatively with media (both traditional and electronic), project management background, ability to work in a collaborative setting, and written communication skills.

Learning to program requires logical problem-solving skills. Each applicant must submit a résumé and a brief (250-word maximum) statement of interest describing any programming experience/knowledge which qualifies him or her for the program. Individuals with little or no experience in programming may prepare for the program by completing Fundamentals of Computer Programming. After successful completion of Fundamentals of Computer Programming, students are qualified to enter the Certificate Program in Visual Basic Programming.

Health Information Administration

This nine-month credit program covers health and patient data systems, computer systems in health care, with emphasis on electronic health records and health informatics, systems analysis, leadership skills, quality assurance, finance and legal issues.

Admission Requirements:
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university is required. A satisfactory grade-point average of 2.5 for all academic work is preferred. However, demonstrated levels of professional competency necessary to successfully complete the program may be used to satisfy the grade-point requirement. Students who have not completed a baccalaureate degree may seek admission to the Evening Degree Program and the HIA Program. Students working toward an evening bachelor's degree may major in HIA. Successful completion of the evening degree and HIA major is acknowledged with award of the certificate and a Bachelor of Science degree in HIA. Students with an AA degree that qualifies under the Direct Transfer Agreement may transfer directly to the University of Washington. Students with an AAS-HIT degree can qualify for the Evening Degree Program by earning the required 75 transferable credits through their community college or UW Distance Learning programs. Primary Care Nurse Practitioner

This program is offered in Seattle. Didactic content is covered through videotapes, which can be viewed at the participant's own pace and time. Construction Management

This program is a sequence of five credit courses providing a coherent overview of the fundamental areas of construction management.

Admission Requirements:
Students must have basic proficiency in the use of Windows programs, word processing and spread sheets on a microcomputer to successfully complete CM 422. Students lacking this knowledge should take a basic Windows class from a local community college before enrolling in CM 422.

UW Extension offers two courses to prepare students for the Certificate Program in Construction Management:

  • CM 313/323 Construction Methods and Materials
  • CM 320 Construction Contract Documents

Modality:
The classroom format begins in September 2001 in Seattle, and in January 2002 in Bellevue; classes meet two evenings per week for eight months. The distance learning format begins in August 2001; classes are taken one at a time; the program lasts for 16 months.

Geographic Information Systems

An evening certificate program for professionals in a variety of fields who wish to use the analytical power of geographic information systems (GIS).

Admission Requirements:
This program requires a baccalaureate degree and experience in a field such as planning, engineering, public works, utilities, resource management, commercial real estate, or branches of business or marketing which require spatial analysis. Experience with relational databases, data processing, and/or statistics is required. Experience with cartography or spatial analysis would be helpful. Direct knowledge of GIS is not necessary, but applicants should be comfortable with the functions of computers and software. Each student must have an e-mail address continuously during the program. In addition, students must have access to the Web outside of class on an ongoing basis.

Modality:
Classes meet two evenings per week on the UW campus in, Seattle. Technology-intensive classes meet in the GIS Lab of the UW Geography Department

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year institution, or two years of college and appropriate work experience; A minimum of two years of planning experience; A résumé detailing related experience; and A written statement of interest describing the applicant's reason for applying to the program

Modality:
This program will be conducted largely online, punctuated by two intensive days (Friday-Saturday) of field exercises twice a quarter.

Wetland Science and Management

This eight-month certificate program is designed to provide a multidisciplinary examination of wetlands in a landscape setting. The program includes several one-day weekend field trips to wetland sites.

Admission Requirements:
Completion of at least two years of college (including at least 15 credit hours in the natural sciences), or two years of experience in ecology, geology, resource management, wetlands regulation or monitoring, land-use planning, hydrology, civil engineering or legal or policy fields dealing with the environment.

Modality:
Classes meet two evenings per week on the UW campus in Seattle. Several one-day weekend field trips are also included and replace some of the evening sessions.

Advanced Writing Certificates are offered in three tracks: Creative Nonfiction, Commercial Fiction, and Literary Fiction. Each nine-month program consists of three workshops focused on improving participants' craft in their chosen genre.

Admission Requirements:
Applicants seeking admission to these programs must have successfully completed the UW Writers' Program or a comparable program, or have writing experience equal to or beyond such a level. All applicants must apply to the program. Admission to the program is competitive, based on writing experience demonstrated by a writing sample and other application materials. Eligible candidates should have a bachelor's degree and completed work in their chosen genre, or have substantive drafts or manuscript work in progress. Those accepted into a certificate program are expected to enroll in all three courses during the 2001-2002 academic year.

Modality:
Each nine-month certificate program consists of three workshops, which meet once a week in the evening starting in October 2001 in Seattle.

Audio Production

This eight-month evening certificate program offers a comprehensive overview of the process of recording music. Students work in small groups to produce a music recording or an audio-for-video project.

Completion of at least two years of college, or the equivalent relevant work experience that includes direct hands-on sound production, film/video experience, work in a home studio or experience as a musician.

Modality:
This program is offered in Seattle and Bellevue. Field trips to local studios are also included in the first term. In the second term, students learn the basics of ProTools, and explore the concepts of the first term in a professional studio setting.

This nine-month program is intended for individuals who wish to explore photography as an artistic medium. Participants become familiar with a variety of creative processes for developing images and ideas using photography.

Previous darkroom experience is not required, but applicants must have a basic understanding of how the camera functions. Applications are evaluated by a review committee of the advisory board. Acceptance of program participants is selective, based on the applicant's experience, education, and clarity, organization and persuasiveness of the letter of application. Certificate students must provide their own 35 mm camera for the entire program.

Admission Requirements:
Applicants must have completed at least one prior course in drawing, and demonstrate an understanding and technical ability to execute concepts such as perspective, use of tone, line, texture, composition, and design. Applicants must also have completed at least one prior course in the biological or life sciences. A letter of application, stating interest and expectations for this program, at least one drawing sample, and a résumé are also required.

Modality:
Students take two evening courses per term on the UW campus in Seattle. Some Saturdays may replace evening sessions.
