Professor Raymond Jonas, Giovanni and Amne Costigan Endowed Professor in History, discusses the decisive 1896 battle of Adwa, in which Ethiopian Emperor Menelik routed an invading Italian army, making Ethiopia the only African country to resist European colonization successfully before 1914. Adwa was a global event because it unsettled convictions about race and nations in Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
