As UWAA volunteers, you're clearly the type of alumni who value community. What was it that first piqued your interest as a student? Did you participate in the Greek system, dorm life, campus clubs, the Husky Band, or other groups? And if so, how did that impact your life?
We're hoping to offer even more involvement opportunities for students, by pairing them with alumni in service learning projects such as Habitat for Humanity and Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. By sharing in today's UW community, alumni will set a great example for students by showing that staying connected pays a great dividend.
With the UW's expansion to three campuses, along with an increase in demand, diversity, class size, and academic competition, the risk is great that students will feel less connected to the Husky experience. But with the participation of active alumni who encourage students to get involved, we can give the UW the kind of close culture which previous generations have enjoyed.
We've got a great start going with the UW's inaugural Common Book Project, which will involve both students and alumni in reading the same book - Tracy Kidder's Mountains Beyond Mountains, the inspiring story of Dr. Paul Farmer and his work in global health. It's a great way of helping students and alumni establish an intellectual bond.
In the coming school year, please join us as we introduce new volunteer opportunities which will team alumni and students working toward a common goal. And fall is always a great time to start! We kick off the school year with our popular Husky Sundae and First Day at Red Square. And mark your calendar for our Homecoming Kickoff and Homecoming Rally on the evening of October 27! It's a great time to celebrate the start of another school year.
Whether you like to mingle, build, mentor, fund-raise, or share your perspective with those following in your footsteps, we'd like to help make the UW campus smaller for today's students. Keep an eye on our volunteer opportunities page, and let us know how you'd like to help!
