Alums and students build bridges with Habitat for Humanity

We're extremely proud of the great team effort that occurred on Saturday, May 20, as staff members, alumni volunteers and students joined together at a Habitat for Humanity build at Snoqualmie Ridge.

Kyle Funakoshi, UWAA senior manager for Volunteer Programs, and student Aaron Cho led the group. The crew of 19 Huskies met at the Alumni House at 7:30 a.m. to carpool out to the site. After a briefing by leaders from AmeriCorps, assignments and instructions were given out and the group went on to work on three houses. Volunteers helped with prep for the foundation, framing and other jobs.

UW volunteers get instructions on the day ahead.
Volunteers are briefed at the job site.

Alumni Craig Baerwaldt, Melinda Davey and Emma Underwood worked side by side with Cho's student group on the project, which was a trial run in hopes of creating more such opportunities in the future. Additional alumni and student service events are in the works, including a holiday Teen Feed, a Martin Luther King Day of Service, and collaboration around the inaugural UW Common Book, "Mountains Beyond Mountains" by Tracy Kidder.

If you'd like to participate in a Habitat for Humanity build with other Huskies, or are interested in more alumni/student service learning events, please e-mail ktofte@u.washington.edu.

Thanks to all for lending a hand!
