Last Month's Trivia Contest Answer

In the July 2008 UW NewsLinks trivia question, we described NASA’s Stardust project, overseen by UW astronomer Donald Brownlee, which sent a research capsule to retrieve comet dust from the far side of Mars. We asked how many miles the capsule had traveled between its launch in 1999 and its return to earth in 2006:

    1. 771 million miles
    2. 900 million miles
    3. 1.55 billion miles
    4. 2.88 billion miles
    5. 4.08 billion miles

The correct answer is #4, 2.88 billion miles—the longest round-trip in the history of space exploration.
