Light rail could arrive on the UW campus in 2016, thanks to progress in securing a $750 million grant from the federal government. Sen. Patty Murray and U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters held a news conference Nov. 27 to announce federal approval for Sound Transit to enter the final design phase for the University Link light rail extension. The $1.75 billion project would build a line from downtown under Capitol Hill and ending at Husky Stadium. Sound Transit hopes to eventually extend the line to Northgate, depending on a November 2007 ballot measure.
