UW to Cover Tuition for 5,000 Low-Income Students Through 'Husky Promise'
A revolutionary financial aid program called Husky Promise will allow about 5,000 in-state undergraduates to attend the University of Washington tuition-free next fall, President Mark A. Emmert, '75, announced Oct. 11. The program targets students from low- and lower middle-income families and guarantees that they will not go into debt to pay for their tuition and fees if they make sufficient progress and graduate within five years.

More Huskies Than Ever: Enrollment Hits Record, Includes Increased Diversity
The UW's Seattle campus broke several records when it opened its doors Sept. 28, including setting a new enrollment record of 39,524 students, beating last year by 273. Seattle also has the largest freshman class in history and the most diverse since a 1998 voter's initiative banned affirmative action by state agencies.

UW Medicine Receives $6 Million in Gifts for Stem Cell Research
Orin Smith, '65, retired Starbucks president and chief executive officer, donated $5 million for the UW's Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, the University announced Oct. 26. Smith is chairman of the board for UW Medicine. UW Medicine has also received a $1 million anonymous gift for stem cell research.

Two Confess to Helping Firebomb UW Facility in 2001
Two defendants pleaded guilty Oct. 4 to participating in the firebombing of the UW Center for Urban Horticulture in 2001, one of a string of destructive crimes committed by members of the Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front, according to the U.S. attorney's office. Jennifer Kolar, 33, of Seattle, and Lacey Phillabaum, 31, of Spokane, promised to testify against other members of their group at future trials. Kolar faces five to seven years in prison. Phillabaum faces a three- to five-year term.

Despite Popular Belief, the World Is Not Running Out of Oil, UW Scientist Says
If you think the world is on the verge of running out of oil or other mineral resources, you've been taken in by the foremost of seven myths about resource geology, according to a UW economic geologist. "The most common question I get is, 'When are we going to run out of oil.' The correct response is, 'Never,'" says Eric Cheney, a UW professor emeritus of Earth and space sciences. "It might be a heck of a lot more expensive than it is now, but there will always be some oil available at a price, perhaps $10 to $100 a gallon."

Very Long-Term Forecast: Northwest Winters Will Be Even Wetter
If you think Pacific Northwest winters are gray and rainy now, just wait. By the end of this century winter storms are likely to be much more pronounced, particularly west of the Cascade Range, according to new University of Washington research. The reason is that the Aleutian Low, a low-pressure system near the Aleutian Islands that is most pronounced during winter months, is moving farther to the north and east, and the general track of storms coming from the Pacific is moving farther north.
