Chasing the Blues Away: Brief Intervention Reduces Symptoms of Depression
Taking a page from the treatment book on alcohol abuse, UW researchers successfully tested a brief, low-cost intervention to deal with depression, the No. 1 mental health problem in the United States. Students with mild depression who received the treatment reported a 20 percent reduction in the severity of their symptoms one month later, compared with an 8 percent drop for the group that was not treated.

But these two events complicate the timing for life on our planet - did it come before "Snowball Earth" or did it evolve when the snowball began to melt? New research into "molecular fossils" shows some organisms existed 50 million to 100 million years before that ice age and somehow did survive.

Panic Disorder Difficult to Diagnose but Very Treatable, Says UW Psychiatrist
Panic disorder is fairly common and can cause frightening symptoms that resemble those of heart, respiratory and gastrointestinal problems, according to a review by a UW psychiatrist in the June 1 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. But even though it can be difficult to diagnose, panic disorder is very treatable and most patients can be cured within just four to eight weeks.
