Last Month's Answer

In the September UW NewsLinks, we noted that the Sylvan Theater reopened after a seven-month renovation and asked what other historical item can be found on this site besides the famous columns:

  1. A memorial to UW students who died in the Spanish Civil War.
  2. A memorial to General Lafayette erected on the centenary of his death in 1934.
  3. The gravestone of the famous Husky mascot dog "Denali," who is buried there.
  4. A statue of James J. Hill, chairman of the Great Northern Railway and UW benefactor.
  5. A stone marker engraved with the words, "Class of 1910."

The correct answer is #2, a memorial to the Revolutionary War General Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, which was financed by Washington state residents of French ancestry and erected on the 100th anniversary of his death in 1934. The memorial to UW students who died in the Spanish Civil War is located in the HUB Yard. The statue of James J. Hill is in front of More Hall. There is no gravestone for the Husky mascot dog "Denali."
