State Budgets Differ on Support for UW, Higher Education
It's a tale of three budgets. There's Governor Christine Gregoire's - mostly good for higher education and the UW - and there's the Senate's, which could be charitably described as disappointing, say UW officials. The Senate budget, announced March 28, passed that chamber on March 30. The House version was released April 8, as UW NewsLinks was being published on the Web. Legislators are hoping to conclude their work by April 24.

Pregnant Women Are at Risk After Car Crash - Even if There Are No Injuries
Pregnant women who are hospitalized following motor vehicle crashes are at increased risk of serious pregnancy outcomes - including fetal death - even if there are no signs of any injury. These women are at risk for such difficulties as placental abruption and caesarean section and their babies are at risk for respiratory distress syndrome and fetal death, according to a new study by investigators at the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center.

Dyslexia Decoded? UW May Have Found Genes Linked to Reading Disorder
UW researchers trying to tease out the genetic basis of dyslexia have discovered a location on chromosome 2 that may contain one or more genes that contribute to the reading disorder. Although the results are encouraging, the team cautioned that the new findings do not mean that scientists have found "the gene" responsible for dyslexia. "Just as with heart disease, no single gene will provide the answer to what causes dyslexia," says Medicine Professor Wendy Raskind.
