Last Month's Answer
In the June 2004 edition of UW NewsLinks, we asked what "momentous change" took place at the June 14, 1986, UW Commencement ceremony?
1. Instead of the UW President delivering the commencement address, the University hired an outside speaker for the first time.
2. Because of the demand for tickets, the UW moved the ceremonies to Husky Stadium.
3. Due to the rising cost of an orchestra, the UW used taped music instead of live music for the first time.
4. Because of the demand for tickets, the UW split the ceremonies into two sessions: "Purple" in the morning and "Gold" in the afternoon.
5. Budget cuts prompted the UW to charge for parking in the Montlake lot during commencement for the first time.
The correct answer is #4. Demand for tickets was so high that the UW split the ceremonies into two parts. But that didn't solve the demand for tickets, and in 1998 the UW moved the ceremonies to Husky Stadium. For more about the move, see June 1998 Columns article about the move to Husky Stadium.
