Last Month's Answer
In the April 2004 edition of UW NewsLinks, we asked of the universities on the following list, which also celebrates columns placed on its campus:
1. University of Southern California, which honors its Trojan identity with columns and arches in its main campus buildings.
2. Columbia University, which uses the 10 columns from the facade of Low Memorial Library for its graphic identity.
3. University of Missouri, which preserved six columns from its original Academic Hall after a fire destroyed the building in 1892.
4. The University of Wisconsin, which uses Ionic columns found in the archway leading to its historic Camp Randall football stadium in promotional material.
5. The University of Alabama, which has three columns in an arch that freshmen are not supposed to walk through "or they won't graduate."
The correct answer is #3, the University of Missouri. For more information on their columns, please see "How Mizzou Got Its Columns"
