Five UW Faculty Elected to Society for World-Renowned Scholars
Five University of Washington faculty members were among those recently elected as fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the highest honors accorded to scholars in the United States. New members include: Sociology Professor Michael Hechter, Computer Science and Engineering Professor Edward D. Lazowska, Medicine Professor Thalia Papayannopoulou, Genome Sciences and Medicine Professor George Stamatoyannopoulos and Genome Sciences Professor Robert H Waterston.

UW Pays $35 Million to Settle Government Billing Fraud Claims
In the largest settlement made by an academic medical center in the nation, University of Washington physician practice plans will pay $35 million to settle a lawsuit charging billing fraud in Medicare, Medicaid and other government health plans, the UW and U.S. Dept. of Justice announced April 30.

UW Probe Finds Drug Overuse in Softball Program
An internal investigation of the UW softball program found that a volunteer team doctor improperly prescribed and distributed large quantities of narcotic medicine and other prescription drugs to UW softball players from 1999 to 2003, the UW announced April 27.

Some Like It Hot: Satellite Measurements Confirm Global Warming
In the past, global warming naysayers often pointed to satellite measurements of temperatures in the troposphere, the layer of atmosphere where most weather occurs. These numbers were inconsistent with fast-warming surface temperatures. But a team led by UW Atmospheric Sciences Professor Qiang Fu has used satellite data in a new and more accurate way to show that, for more than two decades, the troposphere has actually been warming faster than the surface.

Think Before You Flush: Releasing Non-Native Fish Harms Ocean Ecosystems
Flushing your pet tropical fish to set it free is a bad idea. So is releasing it at the beach. Intentional and unintentional aquarium releases have been a leading cause of freshwater fish invasions, but now researchers from the UW and the Reef Environmental Education Foundation have found 16 non-native species of fish-apparently set free from home aquariums-in ocean waters off the southeast coast of Florida.

American Dream of Home Ownership Turns Sour for Many Low-Income Buyers
The American dream of buying and owning a home all too frequently doesn't have a happy ending for many low-income families. Despite federal government policies encouraging home ownership among minority and low-income families, more than half of them left their houses and returned to renting within five years, according to a new study by a UW researcher.

In the Swing: Coaches Tours Visits 8 NW Cities to Aid UW Scholarships
Coaches Tour, now in its 34th year, is an annual golf and dinner event featuring UW coaches and alumni leaders that will visit eight locations throughout Washington and Oregon in May and June. The tour is also a major fund-raiser for regional UW scholarships. Last year's tour raised $49,000.
