Q’s Corner: Notes from the International Trustee

Lee, Kyu C

Huskies Worldwide! Hello!

We’re celebrating summer with a brand new edition of Husky Global. It’s a great time of year. Newly minted Huskies are graduating campus and heading out into the world, while eager incoming students are looking forward to their first day on campus.

This year’s group of graduating seniors, which included students from all across the globe, were as impressive as ever. One of the great honors these students look forward to is being named to the Husky 100. These extraordinary Huskies are recognized for making the most of their time on campus. In 2019, 12 students from outside the United States received this honor. They represented countries including China, India, Canada, Iraq, Slovenia, Philippines, Colombia, Brazil, Pakistan, Mongolia and Indonesia.

If being named to the Husky 100 marks the end of a successful academic career, attending a student send-off marks the start of one. These send-offs are held in cities around the world and give international students a chance to get connected to the campus before they arrive in Seattle. This year, international send-offs will be held in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand. These events are a great way to for international alumni to share their experiences with incoming students. If you’re interested in being a part of a send-off look out for more information this summer or contact Sophie Lee at seungwha@uw.edu.

Attending a send-off isn’t the only way to make a difference for students. Many of you make philanthropic contributions to the University that support its teaching, research and impact. I want to say a special thank you to all of you who participated in the very first Husky Giving Day on April 4. We saw an incredible display of Husky spirit during that day. More than 4,000 gifts were made and we raised nearly $1.6 million for the UW. Go Dawgs!

Before I go, let me extend a personal invitation to all of you to join me for UW Converge Taipei event on November 9, 2019. The date is set for the UW’s premier gathering of international alumni and friends, and you won’t want to miss it! We’ll start the day with a summit on artificial intelligence. You’ll hear perspectives on this exciting topic from experts in law, medicine, engineering and business. In addition, UW President, Ana Mari Cauce will deliver a keynote address. After the summit, you’ll get to connect with UW’s world-class alumni network at a poolside after party!

It’s a great time to be an International Husky!
