UWAB Board

More than 180 people gathered at the Grand Hyatt hotel in downtown Seattle on May 12, 2012 for the first annual University of Washington Alumnae Board Mother’s Day Scholarship Brunch.

In a room decorated in purple and gold, Alumnae Board members, alumni, family and friends raised over $7,800 for the UWAB scholarship fund. Guests showed their Husky spirit by participating in a silent auction, raffles, and by making generous donations.

Highlights included a video tribute to motherhood that had the audience laughing and crying—a perfect introduction for special guest Jean Smart ’74, who shared stories from her childhood and her own motherhood experiences.

The brunch guests heard a first-hand account of the value of a UWAB full-year tuition scholarship from the most recent recipient, Siraj Haq. Thanks to the scholarship award, Siraj is expected to complete his degree in 2013. His post-graduation plans include taking the next steps towards achieving his goal of a career in medicine.

In his remarks, Siraj expressed gratitude to his mother for the example she set pursuing her own education, and for the love and encouragement she continues to provide as he pursues his dreams.

This event couldn’t happen without the help of many people. Special thanks to our own Sue Williams for her tireless efforts on our behalf. We are also grateful to Kevin Cavanaugh, Kyle Funakoshi and everyone at UWAA for their continued support.

Mark your calendars and plan to join us Saturday, May 11, 2013 as we gather again to raise scholarship funds for truly outstanding students like Siraj. Your support of the UWAB means that we can help the next generation of Huskies realize their dreams of receiving world class educations from the University of Washington. Thank you!

UWAB Viewing Parties
Husky football season provides the UWAB with a great opportunity to increase our visibility with Husky fans. For the second consecutive season, the UWAB has hosted away-game viewing parties at World Sports Grille (formerly Jillian's Billiards) in South Lake Union, where Husky fans young and old can come together to cheer on the Dawgs! In support of our mission to raise scholarship money, World Sports Grille donates $2 for every $10 buffet meal, and $1 for every $3 draft beer purchase. At the parties, we also sell tickets for prize drawings and feature other entertaining contests to engage loyal Dawg fans.

To date, we’ve raised $2,500. We hope to exceed last year’s efforts, which resulted in a total of $5,000 raised for Husky scholarships.

The parties are a great way to share your Dawg love with other devoted fans. No reservations are required, and you can come as you are – of course, wearing purple and gold would be the right thing to do! Come on down and join us for the last party of the season on December 22 at 11:30 a.m. as the Huskies take on the Boise State Broncos in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas.

Tis the Season for Giving...
Our Mission: Create programs, events, and opportunities that engage alumni and friends of the UW to continue our legacy of awarding scholarships and fostering relationships with tomorrow’s leaders.

The University of Washington Alumnae Board (UWAB) continues to be an active, vibrant group of UW alumnae who are dedicated to ensuring that present and future Huskies will have the opportunity to receive a world-class University of Washington education. For over 65 years, we have awarded full tuition scholarships to deserving students. To continue to do this, we need your help.

The last few years have been hard for all fund raising groups. The UWAB Scholarship fund has also been challenged to do more with less, because the cost of tuition continues to rise. We’re a long way from that very first scholarship award of $100, back in 1909, but we need far more than $100 to meet the educational costs faced by today’s students.

It is central to our mission to have the resources to continue to award full year tuition scholarships. The goal of the UWAB is to award more than one full tuition scholarship per year.

Here are four ways that you can make a difference in the lives of the students we serve:

  1. Make plans now to attend the Mother’s Day Scholarship Brunch on May 11, 2013
  2. Invite your friends and family to the brunch, or host a table
  3. Become a sponsor or donate items for the silent auction
  4. Make a donation anytime to the UWAB by going online or mailing your donation to:
    UWAB
    4333 Brooklyn Ave NE
    Seattle, WA 98195-9508

All gifts go directly to student scholarships.

With your help we can grow our fundraising events and change the lives of hard working, deserving students, one scholarship at a time!
