The Libraries' mission of connecting people with knowledge includes "hands-on" methods, and we recently celebrated the opening of the Media Center's mediArcade in Allen Library. By utilizing state-of-the-art as well as "legacy" equipment, students can create, view, listen to and critique media in many forms. As methods of disseminating knowledge evolve, our methods of accessing that knowledge--whether hand-written musical notes, scans of glass-plate negatives, or hand-penned diaries--assure that scholars of now and in coming years can see through the lens of the past to create knowledge for the future.
And in the not-too-distant future, I hope to say hello to you on May 9 at our Literary Voices event at Club Husky where playwright Robert Schenkkan will deliver the keynote. 25 authors will host dinner tables at the 10th annual Friends of the Libraries signature event to raise funds for Libraries Conservation to match the 1.25 million dollar award from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Learn more. |

Authors dine to support Libraries' conservation. Playwright Robert Schenkkan will deliver the keynote at Literary Voices 2015 on May 9. For anyone unfamiliar with the author of the Pulitzer Prize winning "The Kentucky Cycle," Schenkkan's "All The Way" won the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics, Drama League, the inaugural Kennedy Prize and the ATCA/Steinberg Awards for Best Play, and broke two Broadway box office records. It played to sold-out houses at the Seattle Rep last season. He is currently adapting "All the Way" as a feature for HBO and Steven Spielberg, beginning production in August 2015. Its sequel, "The Great Society," (commissioned by Seattle Repertory Theater) is headed to Broadway in 2016.
Join the Friends of the Libraries and emcee Nancy Guppy at one of 25 tables hosted by authors including Science Fiction writer Vonda N. McIntyre, co-mystery writers Aaron Elkins and Charlotte Elkins, arts writer R.M. Campbell, medical novelist Carol Cassella and UW historians John Bolcer and Antoinette Wills. Tickets are $150. Now open: mediArcade! UW Students and researchers now have hands-on access to equipment to watch and create videos, listen to and edit music, record TV shows, play and critique video games, and digitize and preserve vintage media in the mediArcade in Allen Library. Equipment includes iMacs with Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Compressor, Audacity, Handbrake, MS Office, MPEG Player, Quicktime Pro and Piezo; 65" Samsung TVs with region-free Blu-Ray, DVD and VHS players; and Sony WiiU, Playstations 2 and 4 and X-Box 360 game consoles. The equipment is funded by UW students via the Student Technology Fee. Priority is given to students working on academic projects. Learn more. |

Libraries K-manhwa collection. When the owners of an antiques shop in Washington purchased an abandoned storage locker full of Korean manhwa, or comics, they planned to throw them on eBay and make it rich.
But the would-be manhwa moguls quickly learned that selling 15,000 books in a language they couldn’t understand was all but impossible. After a few unsuccessful efforts, they gave up and emailed the University of Washington to ask if they could make a donation. Read more in the Korean Joongang Daily.
