Seattle Principal Models Excellence in Education

Richard ItoRichard Ito (Danforth 4, '92) is invested in preparing a new generation of principals for success. Ito, the highly respected principal of Crystal Springs Elementary School, mentors interns in the UW College of Education's Danforth Educational Leadership Program and early career leaders at the Center for Educational Leadership (CEL). He has also served for over a decade on the College's Professional Education Advisory Board.


The Professional Certification Program:
Providing Content in Context

CertificationAfter a certain amount of field experience, teachers in Washington state must earn a second certification. The College of Education's Professional Certification Program offers its educators experiential, context-based learning experiences in the College of Education and other UW academic units.

The Link Between Research and Practice

Sheila Edwards Lange, Ph.D.Sheila Edwards Lange (Ph.D. '06), the newly minted interim vice president for minority and affairs/vice provost for diversity, has an extensive administrative background, but recognizes there is often a disconnect between research and practice when it comes to higher education administration. To bridge this gap, Edwards Lange came to the College of Education to learn how to be a better researcher.

Remembering Bill Winn

Bill WinnEducators lost a talented colleague and a trusted friend with the untimely passing of Professor Bill Winn in May. Please help preserve Bill's memory and honor his career by making a gift to the Bill Winn Memorial Fund. The fund will be administered by the University of Washington College of Education and support deserving students in the fields of educational technology and the learning sciences.

Faculty Updates


New Associate Dean for Academic Programs

Tom Stritikus is the College’s new Associate Dean for Academic Programs.  In this role, he will work with faculty to strengthen academic programs and will ensure that all College of Education students are well served.  College of Education Dean Patricia A. Wasley notes that Stritikus is “an excellent teacher, respected in his field and responsive to academic needs in [Washington] state.”

Staff Update


New Assistant Dean for Development and External Relations

Margaret Ann Bollmeier is the College’s new Assistant Dean for Development and External Relations.  In this role, she will serve as the chief fundraiser for the College, and will connect a community of educators and philanthropists committed to the College’s mission to transform learning.

“When I first met her it was abundantly clear that Margaret Ann possessed the experience, knowledge, and background to help the college build on our well-established accomplishments,” says Dean Wasley.  “I am thrilled that Margaret Ann has accepted the position.”

Alumni Update


After a yearlong absence from the UW School of Social Work, Margaret Spearmon (’99) has returned in the newly created position of Associate Dean for Student and Professional Development.  In this role, she will be responsible for strengthening the School’s commitment to the quality of student life and student participation, and will act as a liaison between the School and the community at large.  Previously, Spearmon served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Leadership and Policy Professor Ed Taylor (’94) was recently appointed the vice provost and dean for undergraduate academic affairs for the University of Washington.  Click here for additional information about Taylor’s new role.

Publication Update


Research That Matters is an annual publication highlighting UW College of Education research.  The 2006 edition, Research That Matters: Closing the Gap, focuses on the changing demographics in Washington schools, addresses issues of equity in today’s classrooms, and examines the growing achievement gap between low-income/minority students and their white/ more affluent peers.

Partnership Update


So far, the partnership between Seattle’s Sanislo Elementary and the College of Education to help bolster Sanislo’s efforts in math instruction has been enormously successful.

The amount of 4th graders passing math has increased from 45% in 2005 to 65.4% this year.

Congratulations to both the College of Education team and the Sanislo teachers for a job well done.  Keep up the good work!        

Professional Development


The 2006-2007 Teachers as Scholars seminars are now open for registration.  Seminars begin in October and run through May.  More detail on these courses is up on the web at http://www.lectures.org/tas.html, where registration is also possible.
