Proposal for Biology Department Funding
K-wing Courtyard Renovation 2006-2007
Beta Beta Beta Biological Honors Society Omicron Eta Chapter
University of Washington Seattle

1. Goals and how it will benefit the UW Biology community: The K-wing courtyard just south of Hitchcock hall is a diamond in the rough that has been largely neglected over the past decade. The 40 foot central planter that once had beautiful plants and a winding trail has now become overgrown and is an unfortunate eyesore. At the same time Biology Students have no central outdoor gathering place or study area that would allow them to take in the beauty of nature as they study it. We propose to rescue the once beautiful K-wing courtyard and make it a vibrant and welcoming community and learning space for Biology Students. It is our hope to plant low maintenance, biologically interesting plants that will attract birds. We hope to install three tables so that as students can watch wildlife as they study, have lunch or congregate. This renovation will create a much needed community space full of vibrant plants and birds where students now and for years to come will be able to gather as a community, study and be inspired.

2. Physical Changes Needed:

  • Remove old and overgrown plants and invasives that have taken over the central and smaller adjacent planters in the K-wing Courtyard.
  • Pressure-wash the cement walls and other areas covered in moss and grime (This was completed March 19th by the UW Grounds Crew).
  • Replant low water, low maintenance plants that are biologically interesting and attractive to birds.
  • Label these new plants as an educational resource
  • Re-define the overgrown trail through the central planter.
  • Install a tree-snag as a perch for birds
  • Install tables that will allow students to study and gather outside in this new community space

    3. Budget:

$2991.50 Three 8 foot long recycled plastic picnic tables from Belson Outdoors (Please see attached quote)
    $300.00 New Plants
$50 labeling materials for new plants
    Total: $3341.50

We are accepting donations to support this plan to renovate the K-Wing Courtyard for the use of students. Please make a gift to the Biology Undergraduate Fund for Excellence. Contributions can be made online here.
