UW NetID

Who is and who is not eligible to get a UW NetID?
At this time (November 2005), most alumni and UW Alumni Association members are eligible for a UW NetID, but not all.

List of alumni and member populations that MAY NOT BE eligible for a UW NetID:

  1. Degreed alumni of UW with no Social Security Number and no Student ID number on file with UW.
Explanation: The UW NetID matching process relies on Social Security Number or Student ID. If we already have your SSN on file, we can ask you to match against it. A recent change in UW policy means that, if we don't have your SSN, or if we have an incorrect SSN, we cannot ask you for your SSN. For many alumni, the fall-back is the Student ID. We have many Student IDs on file, and the Registrar's Office has more on microfiche, but for those alumni without an SSN or with an incorrect SSN, or without a Student ID, at this time we may not be able to match you to your alumni record, and therefore you may not be able to create a UW NetID. We are working to resolve this situation as soon as is practical.

  2. Non-alumni members of UWAA with no Social Security Number and no Student ID number on file with UW.
Explanation: If you attended a class at UW at any time since 1983, even if you didn't receive a degree, we may have your SSN on file, or you may have a Student ID. If either of these is true, you may still be able to get a UW NetID, but if we have no SSN on file and you never took a class from UW, at this time you will not be able to create a UW NetID. We are working to resolve this situation as soon as is practical.

What is a UW NetID and why should I get one?
UW Computing & Communications provides detailed information on what a UW NetID is and how it works.

As to why, you might want to show your pride in your alma mater by using a UW e-mail address, or you might want to use an online service for career networking or lifelong learning. You'll need a UW NetID to do any of those things.

What do I do if I've forgotten my UW NetID password?
UW Computing & Communications provides information on how to reset your UW NetID password.

E-mail and Computing Services

What services are available to UW alumni and UWAA members?
UW Computing & Communications maintains a description of e-mail and computing services available to UW alumni and UWAA members. UWAA members can also search Career Connections and the online alumni directory.

I'm a UW student. What happens when I graduate?
You must indicate your desire to continue using UW e-mail and computing resources after you graduate. UW Computing & Communications will contact you during your final quarter of studies to tell you about alternatives and show you how/where to sign up for continued services. If you don't take any action upon graduating, you can always sign up later as an alumnus, but you will lose any stored e-mails or Web sites you may have had access to as a student.

UW C&C provides a fact-sheet with complete details about the transition from student to alumnus.

Is WebPine the only way I can access my UW e-mail?
Because the Web is a limited environment, and because WebPine must relay your e-mail through a Webserver, it is not as fast, efficient or feature-rich as non-Web based e-mail programs. WebPine is best for people with relatively light e-mail loads; heavy e-mail users and users with slow Internet connections may find it to be limiting or slower than they would like.

Users desiring an alternative to WebPine can use desktop e-mail programs using either the IMAP or the POP mail server protocols to read UW e-mail. Except for purchasers of the premium MyUW.net service, neither the UWAA or the University of Washington can provide any support to alumni using alternatives to WebPine.

For your information, there are instructions on how to configure popular desktop e-mail programs.
