Lectures
The alumni association and its academic clubs, in conjunction with campus units such as the College of Arts & Sciences and the School of Business, host a number of annual lecture series and luncheons. Focusing on diverse topics of wide appeal, these series highlight the intellectual resources of the University.
Upcoming Lectures
Evans School Lecture: Leadership at the Crossroads Series 10/6
The Leadership at the Crossroads Series will feature three speakers for the 2008-2009 academic year. The fall event features Orin Smith, who led Starbucks Corporation as president and CEO, spent 14 years with Deloitte & Touche, and served as chief policy and finance officer for two Washington state governors. He will be speaking on corporate social responsibility.
Engineering Lecture Series: Where Humans and Robots Connect 10/16
Yoky Matsuoka, associate professor, Computer Science & Engineering, is a trailblazer in the emerging field of neurobotics, transforming our understanding of how the central nervous system coordinates musculoskeletal action and of how robotic technology can enhance the dexterity and mobility of people with disabilities. Last year she received a MacArthur “Genius” Award and was named one of Popular Science’s “Brilliant 10”. Hear this rising star talk about her quest to build the ultimate prosthetic: a fully functional replica of the human hand, controlled directly by the brain.
Engineering Lecture Series: Beyond Oil: Powering the Future 10/30
Transportation consumes 70% of the oil used in our country. As worldwide demand for oil soars, supplies tighten, and prices skyrocket, how will we keep transportation moving? Can we develop efficient, environmentally-sound, and economic alternative energy sources? Miles P. Drake, Senior Vice President Research and Development, Chief Technology Officer, Weyerhaeuser and Daniel Schwartz, Boeing-Sutter Professor, Chemical Engineering and Associate Dean of New Initiatives, College of Engineering, explore the future of energy.
A&S Centennial Lecture: Beyond the American Point of View Wednesdays, 10/29, 11/5, 11/12, 11/19
Four Arts and Sciences departments will be celebrating their centennials in 2009 – Near Eastern Languages and Civilization, Scandinavian Studies, Asian Languages and Literature, and the Jackson School of International Studies. This series intends to bring these four departments together to discuss one topic each night from diverse perspectives.
