UW Impact’s 2017 Legislative Preview: The Role of Higher Education in a Changing Economy

Thurs. Jan 5, 2017      7 p.m.

HUB Lyceum

Admission is FREE

Jobs and anxieties over a changing economy were some of the issues voters had on their minds when they went to the ballot box in November. Technology continues to reshape our economy, disrupt traditional industries and create millions of jobs in fields that didn’t even exist ten years ago. The UW has positioned itself as one of the drivers of this new economy, churning out graduates, technologies and start-ups in new, innovative fields.

Join moderator Joni Balter and UW Impact for an evening of conversation on higher education’s role in a changing economy. How can higher education make sure we don’t leave Americans behind as technology replaces jobs and reshapes skill sets? How important is state investment in STEM education to the future of Washington’s economy? Are the liberal arts still a worthy investment? Is any of this relevant if we can’t fund K-12? Hear from government and business insiders as we unpack these questions in preparation for Washington’s 2017 legislative session.

The evening’s moderator is Joni Balter and panelists include Maud Daudon, Cyrus Habib and Rob McKenna, ’85.

Joni Balter is a multi-media journalist, a Seattle University and UW Evans School of Public Policy and Governance lecturer, and a KCTS9 political analyst and advisor. She’s contributed to KUOW, Bloomberg View and The Seattle Times as a columnist.
