National Book Award recipient Barry Lopez discusses the writer’s role in engaging the public on environmental issues. After the lecture, join the speaker for a reception in the Walker Ames Room (Kane 225).


Author Barry LopezAbout the speaker: Barry Lopez’s work has taken him to more than eighty countries over the past fifty years. His books include “Arctic Dreams,” for which he received the National Book Award, “Of Wolves and Men,” a National Book Award finalist, several essay and short story collections, among them “About This Life” and “Resistance,” and the New York Times bestseller “Crow and Weasel,” a novella-length fable. His essays and stories appear regularly in Harper’s, Granta, Manoa, Freeman’s, The American Scholar, and other publications in the United States and abroad, and his shorter work has appeared in several hundred anthologies, including “Best American Essays,” “Best American Spiritual Writing,” “Best American Non-Required Reading,” “Best American Magazine Writing,” “The Pushcart Prize Anthology” and the “Best” collections from The Paris Review, National Geographic, Outside, Orion, The Georgia Review, and Witness. He lives in rural western Oregon with his wife, the writer Debra Gwartney, with whom he edited “Home Ground,” a guide to colloquial American landscape terms. He is the recipient of numerous cultural and literary awards, and has frequently collaborated on theatrical, musical, photographic, and fine publishing projects with a diverse group of American artists. barrylopez.com

About the Maxine Cushing Gray Lecture: The Maxine Cushing Gray Award was established in 1985 at The Seattle Foundation by friends and admirers of the late Maxine Cushing Gray, who sought to honor her contributions to journalism and her tireless work to recognize and encourage excellence in writing. In 2004, the award fund was moved to the UW Libraries.
