UW's Husky Union Building as first built in 1949

It's been 50 years since the Husky Union Building—the HUB—opened its doors. To the left is a photo of the original wing, which opened in 1949. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the HUB will mount a monthlong historical exhibit in October and offer several free events. At 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26, the HUB will celebrate its dedication with free cake, punch and acknowledgements by President Richard L. McCormick and other campus dignitaries. Free double features will be shown in the HUB Auditorium with films from 1949 paired with films from the late 1990s. Among the classics are Adam's Rib starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn on Oct. 26 and White Heat starring James Cagney on Oct. 28. On Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 30, the HUB will hold a free 50th anniversary dance with live music from the Big Band era. Organizers are also looking for alumni memories of the HUB over the years. To share your recollections, contact HUB Assistant Director of Operations Paul Zuchowski at (206) 543-8181 or e-mail badgers@u.washington.edu
