In the photo, a member of the Yakama Nation performs a traditional dance for UW President Richard L. McCormick, 30 UW professors and other guests as the 1999 UW Faculty Field Tour visited Yakima June 16. In its second year, the field tour takes faculty new to the UW on a 1,100-mile, five-day tour of the state. Among the many highlights were stops at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Grand Coulee Dam, a "Welcome to Washington" reception in Spokane, a meeting with lawmakers in Olympia and a visit to the Olympic National Resources Center in Forks. The tour helps new faculty understand where their students come from and exposes professors to new opportunities in research and public service.
