Record Freshman Applications and a Plan for Greater Access

With the UW's Seattle campus accepting just 12,099 of the 19,901 applications it received from high school students this year, UW President Mark A. Emmert, '75, has proposed increasing the size of the freshman class over the next decade.

Emmert's plan would allow the UW to provide access to 600 additional freshmen in Seattle and 1,100 in Bothell and Tacoma over the next 10 years. Graduate and professional enrollment would also grow, increasing total enrollment across the three campuses by approximately 8,000. The plan would also allow the UW to award 2,000 more degrees in "high-demand" fields by 2017-18. At least half of those new degrees would be in areas such as science and technology, engineering, math and life sciences.
