HAVE YOU READ THE COMMON BOOK?

It may be too late for your alma mater to give you a reading assignment, but it’s never too late for a recommendation. The Office of Undergraduate Education and the UWAA are hoping to see the whole University community -- students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends -- reading and talking about Mountains Beyond Mountains this year. (Christine Ingebritsen says she deliberately chose the term “common book” so that everyone, not just freshmen, would feel included in the conversation.) Here are some ways you can participate:

Paul Farmer’s Visit

• UW Alumni Association members are eligible for a limited number of free tickets to Paul Farmer’s Nov. 13 appearance at the UW.

Book Clubs

• The UWAA and the College of Arts and Sciences are launching a book club this fall called “What a Novel Idea!” and Mountains Beyond Mountains is first on the reading list.

• We encourage alumni to consider introducing the common book to their own book clubs and discussion groups, and to tell us about their plans.

• We’re also helping to coordinate special visits to alumni book clubs by honor students, who can facilitate conversation about the common book and how it’s being used at the UW.

• Two members of each book club that hosts an honor student will be invited to Paul Farmer’s Nov. 13 appearance at the UW, and to a special pre-event dinner at Chipotle. The dinner will also include students from Freshman Interest Groups who will be asking Farmer questions during his presentation.

• Individuals looking for a forum to talk about Mountains Beyond Mountains can visit the Office of Undergraduate Education’s common book Web site (see below). We’ll also post a list of clubs that are discussing the book on the UWAA Web site as we learn of them.

Join Us

• For a limited time, you’ll receive a free copy of Mountains Beyond Mountains when you sign up for an alumni association membership through the UWAA common book Web page (see below).
