    Faculty & Friends

    David L. Cohn, who served two terms on the UW Board of Regents and one term as president of the Tyee Board, died Sept. 8. A key community figure credited with helping bring professional big-league stadium sports to Seattle, he had a long and distinguished career in the hospitality industry. He served on the Board of Regents from 1980-81 and 1985-95. He was 85.

    Aubrey Gorbman, professor emeritus of zoology, died Sept. 21. A pioneer researcher in zoology and endocrinology, he was recognized for his longtime support of women in science, and was presented the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring by President Clinton in 1998. He joined the UW faculty in 1963 as chairman of the zoology department. He retired in 1985. He was 88.

    Hilbert J. Henrickson, associate professor of medicine in the UW's WAMI program, died June 29. The U.S. Air Force's 1965 Flight Surgeon of the Year, Henrickson was a longtime family practitioner in Ketchikan, Alaska. He retired in 1996 and was living in Des Moines at the time of his death. He was 72.

    Kathy Husband, '72, '74, and John Stoltenberg, '75, died July 14 when their tandem bicycle was hit from behind by a truck on the Trans-Canada Highway in Alberta. Husband was a longtime school psychologist for Seattle Public Schools. Stoltenberg worked for two decades in the UW physics department. Husband was 53. Stoltenberg was 54.

    John T. "Terry" Moore, former director of the UW School of Music, died Sept. 8. A pianist and lifelong teacher, he was remembered by his colleagues as a warm-hearted, generous man who would let piano lessons run long or provide lessons for free in cases of financial need or friendship. During the tumultuous 1970s, he once defused a tense situation when he faced a hostile mob of students and invited them into the faculty lounge to talk. He joined the UW music faculty in 1948 and retired in 1986. He was 88.

    Verne F. Ray, '31, '33, professor emeritus of anthropology, died Sept. 28. He was one of the first anthropologists at the UW, and served as head of the department and associate dean. He later served as director of the U.S. Interior Dept.'s Emergency Conservation Program on the Colville and Spokane Indian Reservations. He was 98.

    Eugene P. Richey, professor emeritus of civil engineering, died July 3. He joined the UW faculty in 1954 and taught until his retirement in 1982. He was 86.

    Herb Robinson, '49, retired editorial page editor of the Seattle Times, died Oct. 15. A Seattle native, he spent 12 years as editorial page editor at the Times, writing hundreds of editorials and columns while overseeing a staff that helped determine the paper's editorial stances. He also had a distinguished career in TV journalism, receiving a 1956 Sylvania Television Award for the daily news show "Dateline" that ran on KOMO-TV. He was serving on the Columns Advisory Committee at the time of his death. He was 78.

    Allyn H. Seymour Sr., '37, '56, professor emeritus of fisheries, died Sept. 2. The Seattle native joined the UW faculty in 1948 as a research associate in the Applied Fisheries Laboratory. He later served as assistant director of that lab and director of the Radiation Biology Laboratory. He retired in 1978. He was 90.
