Reunions at a Glance

Fifty years ago, the Korean War was under way. Jack Benny, Red Skelton and Milton Berle ruled television. The Huskies men's basketball team was a national power. The UW campus experienced a building boom unparalleled in campus history.

The year 1961 was likewise a busy year. The Husky football team won its second consecutive Rose Bowl. President John F. Kennedy visited campus to attend the University's Centennial celebration. Martin Luther King Jr. also came to speak at the UW in his only Seattle appearance.

"It was a very happy time for me," recalls Julie Emery, '51. "A lot was going on, but I have a lot of good memories."

Students from the classes of 1951 and 1961 are invited to relive those memories and renew acquaintances during Homecoming Week. The Class of 1951 is holding its 50th reunion, while the Class of '61 will hold its 40th. Here's a quick overview:

    Class of 1961 Reunion Brunch
  • When: Three hours before football game (tentatively 9:30 a.m.)
  • Where: Mary Gates Hall
  • What: Brunch and short program
    Class of 1951 Campus Tour
  • When: During football game
  • Where: Begins at Kane Hall, ends at Burke Museum
  • What: Bus tour around campus, followed by tour of Burke Museum and entrance to Shackleton exhibit
    Class of 1951 Post-Game Reception
  • When: After football game (tentatively 5 p.m.)
  • Where: Faculty Club
  • What: no-host cocktails, light snacks
    Class of 1961 Dinner
  • When: 6:30 p.m.
  • Where: Burke Museum
  • What: Cocktails, dinner, dancing
    Sunday, Oct. 21:
    Purple and Gold Society Luncheon
    Open to all reunion classes plus alumni who have graduated before 1952
  • When: Noon
  • Where: Seattle Yacht Club
  • What: Lunch with guest speaker Brewster Denny, '45
