First-Rate Speakers and Secondhand Smoke: Lectures Cover Toxins, Kids, Business Savvy Print
ImageSecond-hand smoke causes lung cancer, but so do a lot of other hazards. So how does a plaintiff who has contracted cancer because of a smoky work environment prove that case to a jury? If anyone knows the answer, it’s James Repace, a biophysicist and “toxic torts” expert who has spent his career documenting the effects of secondhand smoke. He’ll share what he’s learned with a UW audience on May 17 as part of this year’s Earth Initiative “Oceans to Stars” Lecture Series. Entitled “Everyday Toxic Pollutants: Health Hazards & Solutions,” the series will also include presentations by experts on household toxins, the Exxon Valdez oil spill and assessing environmental risks.

It’s one of many impressive lecture series coming this spring. Here’s a sampling of programs the UWAA is producing in partnership with schools and departments across the University:

The Business School has lined up an extraordinary roster of executives for the 17th Annual CEO Lunch Series, including the top brass at Weyerhaeuser Real Estate (Dan Fulton, ’76), Safeco (Paula Reynolds) and Holland America Line and Windstar Cruises (Stein Kruse). They’ll share their experiences, business philosophies and advice with an audience of alumni, friends of the University and members of the Puget Sound business community at sites in downtown Seattle and Bellevue.

Three distinguished UW faculty members will discuss early childhood learning in the Provost’s Lecture Series. Patricia Kuhl, professor of speech and hearing sciences, opens the series April 25 with a talk on “Early Learning, the Brain and Society.” Nursing Professor Cathryn Booth-LaForce will address “Children in Daycare: Science, the Media and Public Opinion” on May 2. And Ilene Schwartz, chair and professor of early childhood education, will speak about “Building Blocks for Starting School the Right Way” on May 9.

Other highlights of the spring lecture season include the UW Libraries Blom Lecture March 9 featuring Weather-Underground-member-turned-“bio-memoirist” Kit Bakke, ’81, ’88, author of Miss Alcott’s E-Mail. The inaugural lecture of the Giovanni and Amne Costigan Professor in History features UW History Professor Raymond Jonas, who will speak on “Ethiopia in the American Imagination” on April 27.
