Great Things to Come: It’s What Being a Husky Is All About

When I walked into the Alumni House last month to start my new career as executive director of the UW Alumni Association, I was filled with a sense of excitement, a bit of apprehension—and a great sense of pride.

The UW and UWAA have long been a part of my life, and it is a thrill to be able to devote myself full-time to serving the University. Over the past six years, I have spent much of my free time as a volunteer and board member, including serving last year as president of the UWAA Board of Trustees. My goal as we move forward is to provide a sense of continuity —carrying on the great work done by former alumni leaders.

One of my highest priorities is to strengthen our efforts to reach out to young alumni and those alumni who didn’t have the opportunity to fully engage with the University while they were students here. We will continue to look for creative ways to see how we reach out to these graduates.

Washington Weekend is coming
One way we will do this is with our big event of the spring—Washington Weekend, which runs April 26–28 at all three UW campuses.

Washington Weekend is when we throw open the doors of the University and invite alumni, students, parents and the community to come to campus and see all the amazing things happening here.

I spent seven years as a student here and I am still learning about the fascinating programs and activities going on in parts of campus I never got around to. I hope I see you on campus during Washington Weekend.

Continuing efforts for a new alumni house

Another goal of mine is to see all of the hard work done over the past several years culminate in a new alumni house—whether at our current location, on campus or in the Safeco complex recently acquired by the University.

Simply put, we need a first-rate facility to serve as a gathering place for alumni, faculty, staff and the community. Our current building doesn’t provide an appropriate welcome for visitors to our world-class university. I will keep you posted as this process moves ahead.

Finding more ways to reach out

I also hope that the UWAA can serve as a more effective advocate for our great university among our alumni and friends.

Finally, I cannot fully express my personal appreciation and that of the entire alumni community for the contribution that John Buller, ’69, ’71, made as executive director. He took the UWAA to new heights and accomplished so much during his action-packed five years. I will try my best to keep us on that path, continuing his great legacy.

What an honor it is to be here to serve you and this great university. Together, we can do outstanding things. And that is what being a Husky is all about.

Yours truly,
