Sidney Culbert, '43, '50, professor emeritus of psychology, died Oct. 28. He taught psycholinguistics and intercultural communication at the UW from 1943-83 and was an accomplished and well-traveled linguist, and a lifelong Esperanto speaker and advocate. He was 90.

Richard W. Gies, longtime UW police officer, died Feb. 19. During his 28-year UW career, which began in 1951, he served during the campus riots of the 1970s. After retiring in 1979, he worked security at Longacres Race Track until it closed in 1992. He was 79.

Johnnie Jesson, who mentored saxophonist Kenny G among many students during his 10 years as a music teacher at the UW, died Oct. 7. He entertained on cruise ships, performed with such stars as Betty Grable, Judy Garland and Sammy Davis Jr., and his band, the Esquires, were regulars at the Washington Athletic Club in the 1960s. He taught at the UW from 1979-89. He was 94.

Clark Kerr, a one-time UW professor of labor who went on to become one of the nation's leading figures in higher education, died Dec. 1. Kerr, who taught at the UW from 1940-43 and again in the fall of 1980 as the Walker-Ames Professor, was the chief architect of the California Master Plan for Higher Education. The plan, which was adopted in 1960, provided an affordable place in higher education for all California citizens. He served as the first chancellor of Cal-Berkeley and later became 12th president of the UC system. He was 92.

Dean Winton Lytle, professor emeritus of electrical engineering, died Oct. 12. He taught at the UW from 1958-96.

Louise Wasson Mansfield, professor emeritus of physiological nursing, died Oct. 19. She specialized in cardiovascular nursing, chaired the Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and edited its scientific journal. She taught at the UW from 1951-95. She was 87.

Robert Nathane, who served as treasurer of the UW Board of Regents, died Oct. 14. A former Merrill Lynch executive, he was arguably the UW's most high-profile treasurer, in large part because of the controversy surrounding investments the UW had made in companies with ties to apartheid South Africa. He helped persuade the regents to invest only in companies that had signed the Sullivan Principles, which said that black employees would be treated the same as white employees. He was 90.

Kazimer Skubi, '32, one of the founding doctors of the UW School of Medicine, died in October. He built one of the first group practices in internal medicine in Seattle and helped back legislation that created the medical school in 1947. He also taught in the UW medical school from 1947-87. He was 92.

John D. Tallman, '51, head coach of the UW swim team from 1962-69 and an assistant athletic director under Joe Kearney, died Oct. 30. A varsity swimmer at the UW, he later went on to serve as assistant athletic director at Ventura College and as a trustee and administrator of the Ventura County (Calif.) Community College Dist. He was 73.
