Search Panel Seeks New Athletic Director Print

President Mark A. Emmert, ’75, announced Feb. 29 the members of the search advisory committee for a new director of intercollegiate athletics. The committee will be chaired by Lizabeth (Betsy) Wilson, dean of UW Libraries.

Other committee members are: Brooke Anderson, UW student-athlete; John Connors, member, Tyee Board of Advisors; Public Affairs Professor J. Patrick Dobel; Accounting Professor Roland E. (Pete) Dukes; Women’s Soccer Coach Lesle Gallimore; Anne Gittinger, ’55, member, Tyee Board of Advisors; Vice Provost for Student Life Eric Godfrey; Scandinavian Studies Professor Christine Ingebritsen; Vice President for Minority Affairs Sheila Edwards Lange, ’00, ’06; Carol S. Niccolls, special counsel to the president; Men’s Basketball Coach Lorenzo Romar; and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Academic Affairs Edward Taylor, ’94.

The committee is searching for a replacement for former Athletic Director Todd Turner, who announced he was stepping down last December. UW Vice President for External Affairs Scott Woodward is the interim director. He has announced that he is not a candidate for the position.

The athletic director runs a department with 23 sports for men and women, serving approximately 644 student-athletes. The department also supports the Husky Marching Band and the rally squad. Jointly with the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, it provides academic support services for students in the program. It is responsible for generating all of its operating and capital revenue.

The committee will identify a small number of qualified finalists for the position; Emmert will make the appointment. The UW should have a new director sometime this year.
