First Take: Columns Makeover Print

Columns Makeover

ImageIt’s not easy keeping your youthful appearance when you are 147 years old. The four columns from the UW’s original building in downtown Seattle are iconic (and Ionic), but they have been showing their age. Several decades ago workers replaced the capitals with replicas made of fiberglass. But the wooden bases had started to rot, so when the UW decided to redo the Sylvan Theater, it was time to replace the bases and make the pillars more secure. Metal supports now rest inside each column to increase stability. The new bases, made of concrete, exactly match the originals but should last a lot longer. The return of the columns couldn’t come at a more appropriate time—when the UW celebrates its 132nd commencement ceremony and the 100th anniversary of its alumni magazine, named after these artifacts from the UW’s beginnings.
