Faculty & Friends
DAVID BODANSKY, who was a member of the Physics faculty for more than 50 years and who chaired the department from 1976 to 1984, died in Seattle Dec. 3 at the age of 88. In his 80s he wrote a highly praised book about nuclear power.
ROBERT M. BLUMENTHAL began teaching at the UW Mathematics department in 1956 and retired in 1997. He was an avid mountain climber who also taught skiing at Steven’s Pass. His family said he was a lovely human being. He was 81 when he died Nov. 8.
BETTY FLETCHER, ’56 was the first woman to make partner at a major Pacific Northwest Law Firm. She served on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for more than 30 years and upheld values of tolerance and respect for human and natural diversity.
JEFFREY LEO CHAPMAN, who died Nov. 6 in Edmonds, worked for the UW for 23 years, most recently in the UW Medical Center Copy Center. He took pride in providing excellent customer service. He was 58.
WINIFRED CHINN, widow of deceased UW regent Ark Chin, died Nov. 7 at age 87. She and her husband were strong supporters of higher education especially UW scholarships. She traveled all over the world and practiced exquisite Chinese calligraphy.
JOHN B. “WHITEY” CORE, played Husky football both offense and defense. He served as a defensive coach under head coach Jim Owens. He died Sept. 8 at age 78.
JURI EENMAA, ’72 earned his doctorate at the UW and then headed the team to install the cyclotron for medical radiation treatments. He was an associate professor who taught physics to oncology residents. He died Sept. 27 at age 72.
NADA ESTES served on the UW School of Nursing faculty from 1962 to 1992. She was known the world over for her pioneering work educating nurses about alcoholism and drug addiction. She was a good friend, loved her book groups and liked to bake desserts. She died Oct. 19 at age 82.
JUDITH OLJAR FROLICH, ’61, a former Kirkland City Council woman who fought to preserve the city’s waterfront, died Nov. 30 at the age of 72. She helped to establish Moss Bay Days.
ROBERT GOODKIN, a respected neurosurgeon and UW professor emeritus of neurological surgery, died Oct. 15. He was 73.
JEAN LANHAM HAIGH volunteered for 15 years at the UW Arboretum. One of her proudest legacies was the Saplings Program, which helped local youngsters discover their city’s “backyard.” She died Sept. 23 at age 89.
MAUREEN McGRATH HENDERSON, a world-famous epidemiologist and expert on cancer prevention, died in Seattle Dec. 4 at age 86. A native of Great Britain, he received the Order of the British Empire.
RUSS HEWITT, ’38, who played Husky football and served his country as a Marine parachutist officer in WW II, died Dec. 16 at the age of 98. Hewitt fought at Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. He held four seats on the Husky 50-yard line for more than 50 years.
LOIS PHILLIPS HUDSON, UW faculty emeritus, was a much beloved writing teacher of many, including David Guterson, ’78. She died Dec. 24, 2010.
ROBERT LEVENTHAL, who served as dean of the UW Business School from 1989 to 1994 and who was CEO of Western Union and other companies, died at age 85. He was at the forefront of management education.
KEN MACDONALD, represented UW employees who refused to sign a loyalty oath in the 1950s. He also helped found the local chapter of the ACLU.
HARRIS MCLASKEY, ’56, ’70, worked for 20 years at the Washington State Library and focused on providing library services to prisons and psychiatric hospitals. He died Sept. 21 at age 81.
GLENN PATCHEN was a former clinical associate professor in obstetrics and gynecology. He delivered more than 5,000 babies. He died Nov. 5 at the age of 77.
MAURICE RATTRAY, JR. a retired professor emeritus of Oceanography who served two terms as department chairperson from 1968 to 1978, died in San Francisco at age 90. He was known the world over for his studies of currents in Puget Sound.
MAUREEN RHEA worked in the Evans School of Public Affairs for many years. Friends and family said she had a vivacious spirit. She died Oct. 20 at age 58.
GUNNAR RODEN was a research professor emeritus of Oceanography at the UW. He was a loving husband and wonderful father. He died Dec. 27 at the age of 84.
DARRELL ROYAL, former UW football coach in 1956, died in Austin, Tex. at age 88. He was known for his “wishbone” offense and for winning two national championships.
GILBERT SAX was a professor of educational psychology at UW and was department chair from 1981 to 1986. Came to UW in 1966 and served as the educational psychology department chair from 1981 to 1986.
GEROLD SCHUBIGER joined the Department of Zoology (later Biology) in 1972 and taught until 2010. He died Nov. 10 at age 76.
SHELBY SCATES, ’54, a longtime reporter, columnist for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and pre-eminent political journalist, died Jan. 3 at the age of 81.
WILLIAM STOEBUCK, ’59, was a law professor at the UW from 1967 until he retired in 2007. He loved teaching, the law and sailing. He was 83.
CALVIN UOMOTO, ’71, ’80, was devoted to serving underprivileged youth, the poor, the economically disadvantaged, prisoners and refugees. He died Oct. 26 at the age of 63.
ROBERT T. WOODWORTH, associate professor emeritus of the Foster School of Business, liked to travel, collect new gadgets and enjoy Whidbey Island. He died Oct. 18 at age 82.
