The Pinnacle of her Career
Sally Jewell
Sally Jewell, ’78, CEO of REI for the past eight years, was selected by President Obama to serve as the Secretary of the Interior, succeeding Ken Salazar. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, as expected, Jewell, who has also served on the UW Board of Regents, is the third UW alum to hold a cabinet post. Brock Adams was Secretary of Transportation under President Carter and Lewis Schwellenbach was Secretary of Labor under President Truman. Jewell, who has a degree in mechanical engineering from the UW, worked in energy and banking. She joined REI in 2000 as chief operating officer and been CEO since 2004. She has served on the Board of Regents since 2001. “I’m humbled,” Jewell said, “and I’m energized by this opportunity.”
