Heather Brooke (Communications ’93), best known as one of the leading figures exposing the British House of Commons’ resistance to disclosing expenses of Members of Parliament (MPs), generating a furor that culminated in the resignation of Speaker Michael Martin.
Dr. Bernie Gratzer, Former chief aerodynamacist for Boeing and professor or aerodynamics at the UW. He has changed the look of the modern airplane with his aerodynamic winglet that is seen on Boeing 737ng, 757, 767, 737 Classics and on gulf steams business jets, Falcons and Hawkers. Not only did Dr Gratzer perfect the performance of the Winglet, with its introduction it has saved more fuel and reduced more green house gases than any other aviation invention in the past 15 years.
Jean Smart – 1974 UW School of Drama
Emmy Award winning actress most well known for her outstanding TV roles on Designing Women, Frazier, Samantha Who, 24, and Hawaii Five-O. Star of many movies and Broadway plays, with a recent Tony nomination for The Man who Came to Dinner.
Paul Magers, UW ’77, fellow Phi Delt, is our CBS 2 News anchor here in Southern California. Winner of several Emmy Awards & Golden Mike. Had guest anchor postion for the NBC Nightly News and the Today Show.
Adam Smith, Law Dawg ’90, is now a U.S. Congressman from the great state of Washington’s 9th District.
Carmela Conroy, Jackson School of International Studies (B.A.,’84) and School of Law (J.D., ’90) is the U.S. Consul General in Lahore, Pakistan. She leads about two dozen Americans and 160 Pakistanis to represent the United States in Punjab Province, population about 90 million.

Ken Troske (BA, economics, 1984) is now a tenured full professor at the University of Kentucky and just recently finished serving on the Congressional Oversight Panel for the TARP bailout. He is well published, too.

Bruce W. Clingan, (BA, Chemistry, 1977) is now Vice Admiral Bruce W. Clingan, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, Plans and Strategy. We went to preschool, grade school, junior high, high school in Bellevue and to the University of Washington together! Bruce also graduated from with a Masters of Science from the University of Southern California. He received his commission via the NROTC program. He has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal (two awards), the Legion of Merit (four awards), the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), among others. And the best part? He delayed a move half a day to attend my father’s funeral. I’ll never forget his kindness: A great UW friend, officer and gentleman.
