Faculty and Friends

HAL AHLSTROM, ’57, ’59, professor of aeronautics and astronautics, died May 11. He also served as director of inertial confinement fusion at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. He was 79.

ROLAND ALBERTO, ’74, a perfusionist at the UW Medical Center for 38 years, died Jan. 19 at age 74. He was born in the Philippines.

ALAN D. ALQUIST, ’85, a UW research scientist, died Dec. 29. He was 59.

ANATOL BRODSKY, a research professor who immigrated from the Soviet Union in 1989, died Dec. 28. He authored and coauthored six books and published more than 300 articles in leading international scientific journals. He was 86.

STEPHANIE CAMP, professor of history and social-justice activist, died April 2. Her book Closer to Freedom: Enslaved Women and Everyday Resistance in the Plantation South was considered a landmark in the field of American social history. She was 46.

WILLIAM LEWIS CLARK, ’61, ’67, a UW computer science professor and administrator, died Jan. 4. He volunteered with the National Ski Patrol at Crystal Mountain for many years. He was 78.

RICHARD DAUGHERTY, ’47, a well-known archaeologist who studied the Makah Tribe, died Feb. 22. After 11 years of excavating Lake Ozette, his team found more than 55,000 artifacts. In the ’60s, he worked with U.S. Senators Warren G. Magnuson, ’29, and Henry M. Jackson, ’32, to enact the National Historic Preservation Act. He was 91.

BLANCHE BEATRICE RUMBLE DEARBORN, who worked with the Washington Park Arboretum Foundation for several decades, died Feb. 5. She also worked as a librarian at the School of Social Work Library. She was 94.

JOE FIREY, ’40, former longtime professor of mechanical engineering, died in December. He held more two dozen combustion-process patents and served in World War II as a submarine tender in the Pacific. He was 95.

JAMES DOUGLAS GALLOMORE, who began working as a biomedical technician for the UW in 1987, died Nov. 25. He was 67.

WILL G. GILLETT, who worked in the UW Genome Center and developed Sequence Tiling and Genetic Variation Software, died March 200. He was 68.

ARTHUR W. GUY, ’55, ’57, ’66, who served the UW for 37 years as a professor of rehabilitation medicine, died April 20. He directed the Bioelectromagnetics Research Laboratory and was honored by the International Microwave Power Institute with its Special Award of the Decade (1970-79) for his contributions. He was 86.

JOHN FARIS HALL, a founding trustee of the UW’s Virginia Bloedel Hearing Research Center and the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island, died Jan. 29. He was 96.

KATHERINE FELICIA HANKEN, executive chef and general manager of 1101 Cafe in the old Terry Hall and founder of the UW’s Local Point Restaurant, died Feb. 1. She was 49.

KIMBERLY HANSON HUGGINS, who spent 28 years at the UW as a dentistry faculty and staff member who advocated for patients with special needs, died Jan. 20. She was director of Special Patient Care and was an affiliate instructor at the School of Oral Medicine.

GREGORY G. JOHN, ’49, who during his cardiology fellowship at the UW helped Robert Bruce develop the cardiac stress test that is used worldwide, died May 5. He was 90.

DAVID LAWRENCE JOHNSON, associate professor of electrical engineering, was a pioneer in artificial intelligence and computer engineering. He died Jan. 19 at the age of 90.

KARL D. KRAMER, ’55, ’57, ’64, who caught in the departments of Slavic languages and literatures and comparative literature for 29 years, died Feb. 19. He taught at the UW from 1970 to 1999 and was an internationally known specialist on Chekhov. He was 80.

LESLIE MACKOFF, ’53, clinical professor of pediatrics and lover of Husky football, died Jan. 24. He was 88.

CHARLES EUGENE MITCHELL, who worked for the UW and was self-employed in hazardous-material training, died Jan. 10. He served with the Marine Corps in Vietnam, where he received three Purple Hearts. Charles retired as a lieutenant firefighter from the Redmond Fire Department in 2002. He was 66.

SIDNEY MILLER, associate professor at the School of Social Work, died Feb. 16. He was an airplane mechanic during World War II and worked as a social worker at the King County Juvenile Court. He was 92.

RICHARD E. NORRIS, ’46, professor in the Botany Department, died July 17. A hallmark of his work is his recognition of the new phylum Chlorarachniophyta. He was 87.

Nancy Pearsall, ’63, ’65, professor of microbiology and immunology for many years, died April 8. She was 86.

CHARLES EDWARD PHILLIPS, ’72, the first African American student in the UW’s MEDEX Physician Assistant training program, died May 4. He was 82.

GEORGE M. PIGOTT, ’50, who taught in the College of Fisheries’ Institute of Food Science for 37 years, died April 6. He was founding editor of the Journal of Aquatic Food Product Technology. He was 85.

ROY L. PLEASANT, ’71, former recruitment coordinator of the Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity, died Nov. 2. He was 65.

GORDON E. PYNE, ’51, ’53, professor emeritus of pediatrics, died Jan. 17. He helped establish Sand Point Pediatrics. He served in the Merchant Marines and the Air Force. He was 91.

LESLIE YALE RABKIN, clinical professor of psychology, psychiatry and behavioral sciences, died Jan. 7. He was 79.

BARBARA LOU RICHARDS, who spent more than 30 years working in the UW dental school’s orthodontic department, died May 7. She was 87.

GLADYS RUBINSTEIN, a former UW student and major benefactor of the University of Washington Press and numerous Seattle arts organizations, died Jan. 26. She was 92.

JAMES F. RYAN, former vice president for business and finance and manager of the UW’s Metropolitan Tract Properties in downtown Seattle, died March 3. He was a founding member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center’s Board of Directors. He was also on the University Bookstore Board of Directors. He was 86.

ROBERT WILLIAM SIMPSON, clinical professor emeritus and former president of the King County Medical Association, died Feb. 13. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was 98.
