Husky Band Director Brad McDavid was selected to serve as one of three artistic directors on an international staff that will coordinate the performances for the official marching band of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

The band, which is officially referred to as the Olympic “Orchestra” due to some countries not having marching bands, will consist of 2008 members from around the globe. McDavid is especially pleased that he was able to invite more than 60 current Husky Band members to join. Student membership will consist of approximately two-thirds high school students and one-third college-aged students.

The first meeting of the international staffing for the ensemble was in Beijing last August, and McDavid is looking forward to this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

McDavid’s Olympic Band participation has come full circle -- he was a student member of the 1984 Olympic Marching Band that was organized for the Opening Ceremonies of the Los Angeles Summer Games.

Asked why he was invited to serve as director, McDavid said, “I’m fairly certain it had something to do with the Varsity-Alumni Band trip to China in 2001. While we were there, we gave a marching exhibition at Beijing University that was attended by an estimated 4,000 people. I met several dignitaries afterward, including the director of China’s renowned Red Army Band. I guess they must have been pretty impressed with what we did!”

McDavid is still waiting to find out the scope of the band’s performances as several performances are still pending approval from the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee. After arriving in Beijing on July 29, the band will perform in and around the host city for several days leading up to the games and then for four days following the Opening Ceremonies. The band will return to Seattle on August 12.
