Honoring 1961

1961 Husky Marching Band

Members of the 1961 Husky Marching Band prepare to take the field on September 29.

In 2007, the University of Washington bestowed an overdue honor on the 1960 Huskies football team – that of national champion.

The UW decided last April to honor the 1960 team as national champions because it went 10-1 in the regular season and then defeated No. 1 and undefeated Minnesota 17-7 in the 1961 Rose Bowl.

Heading into the Rose Bowl, Minnesota had been crowned national champions by the Associated Press because it went undefeated in the regular season; national titles were awarded before bowl games were played. Following the Huskies’ convincing Rose Bowl victory over the Gophers, the Helms Athletic Foundation named Washington as the No. 1 team in the land.

As the UW prepared to honor the 1960 football team at the September 29, 2007 home game against USC, Husky Marching Band Director Brad McDavid asked a committee of band and cheer alumni to begin coordinating its own reunion. As a result, 40 members of that band and cheer squad joined the current UW band for the halftime show that day, which reprised the performance given that day in Pasadena on January 1, 1961.
