Event: Churchill Centre 6th Annual Lecture – “Leadership in Times of Crisis”

Winston S. Churchill, grandson of the former British Prime Minister, delivers the 6th annual Churchill Center Lecture in Seattle. This lecture will explore public leadership in democratic societies during times of crisis.  In “Public Leadership in Times of Crisis,” he reflects on the challenges his grandfather embraced to lead Britain during the early years of World War II, before the U.S. formally entered the war.

 Event: Betty Jane Narver Memorial Lecture with Martha Choe

 Location: Seattle Public Library – Central Library:  Microsoft Auditorium

The 2006 Betty Jane Narver Memorial Lecture on Women in Public Policy features Martha Choe, director of the Global Libraries program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, former director of the Washington State Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development (CTED) under Governor Gary Locke, and former Seattle City Council member. The Narver Memorial Lecture was established at the Evans School of Public Affairs to honor Betty Jane’s legacy of inspired and dedicated civic involvement, her role as a mentor to women in public service, and to showcase the current work of women in civic leadership and public policy positions.

Dean Sandra Archibald and Governor Chris Gregoire co-host a reception for our Olympia area alumni, donors and friends of the Evans School, the first in the history of the Evans School.

Event: National Fiscal Wake-up Call with David Walker, Comptroller General
 Date: Wednesday, November 29, 2006
 Time: 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
 Location: 225 Kane Hall:  Walker-Ames Room

The Fiscal Wake-Up Seminar focuses attention on our nation’s long-term fiscal challenges.  Speakers will include David Walker, Comptroller General of the United States and representatives from the Brookings Institution and Heritage Foundation, co-presented by the Evans School and the Concord Coalition.  The seminar will include UW scholars, elected officials and leaders from around the Puget Sound Region and will explore the context for today’s fiscal policy debates: changing demographics; inadequate national savings; intractable health care costs; the crowding out of discretionary spending on everything from defense to education; and the unsustainable growth of our deficits and debt.

Our annual Graduate Fellowship Luncheon (formerly the Endowed Fellowship Luncheon) honors the many gracious donors who have contributed to graduate fellowships at Evans School of Public Affairs and the students that benefit from their philanthropy.  Endowments and annual gifts provide essential financial support to students pursuing careers in the public, non-profit and private sectors.  Attendees enjoy lunch with current fellowship recipients and learn about their career goals.
