    Visiting Committee, Alumni Partner to Expand Opportunities for M.P.A. Students
    The Evans School has earned a solid reputation for producing highly successful graduates. Key to sustaining this reputation is ensuring that our M.P.A. students obtain hands-on experience working on current policy issues, and internships are superb preparation for the professional positions our graduates take after completing the degree. The Evans School Visiting Committee is taking a leadership role in bolstering our students' knowledge and skills, as well as their employment prospects after graduation.

    Ph.D. Program to Launch in 2006
    Dean Archibald is pleased to announce the launch of our new Ph.D. Program in Public Policy and Management. This program has been approved by the Graduate School Council, and is pending final authorization by the Board of Regents. We are admitting the first class to begin Autumn Quarter, 2006.

    A New Look at the Nation's Charter Schools
    "Hopes, Fears, and Reality: A Balanced Look at American Charter Schools in 2005" is the title of a report recently released on Nov. 21 by the National Charter School Research Project at the Evans School's Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE). The report, edited by Robin Lake and Paul Hill, explores issues such as measuring student achievement, replicating successful charter schools, handling charter school closures and making appropriate comparisons in funding. As the charter school movement expands nationally, the study shows that that growth and quality of such schools can vary widely from state to state.

    West Coast Poverty Research Center Established
    The School of Social Work and the Evans School of Public Affairs are pleased to announce that the UW will be home to the new West Coast Poverty Research Center (WCPRC), a collaborative venture linking our two schools, and the UW Departments of Economics, Sociology, and Geography.

    Evans School Merchandise Now Available!
    The Evans Student Organization (ESO) is having its annual merchandise fundraiser. This year, we are offering T-shirts for men and women, large ceramic mugs, and wide-mouthed Nalgene water bottles.

    New Executive MPA Cohort Graduates December 2005

    Lecture Series - February 9, 23, and March 9, 2006
    From things long past to events we remember ourselves, the tales the forest tells can teach us what may happen in the future - and what we can do to preserve our forested ecosystems. Join faculty from the College of Forest Resources for three informative lectures, where you will learn what it takes to decipher the clues the forest leaves us and what we can learn from our roots.

    Preparing Students For Citizenship
    Feburary 16, 2006, 6:30 p.m.
    School is not just a place for instilling knowledge and an aptitude for learning. It is-or should be-the place where young people come to understand and experience the critical impact and importance of participation in a democratic society. Faculty from the UW College of Education will examine local trends and issues as well as look at examples from South Africa and other emerging democracies to suggest constructive ways of engaging these issues for the future.

    Peace Corps Day
    March 1, 2006 - Forum, Parrington Hall
    Peace Corps Day is an annual celebration of the Peace Corps. Students, alumni, prospective Peace Corps volunteers and community members can learn about Peace Corps service and the three Peace Corps Master's International Degree programs at the University of Washington. Participants can meet returned Peace Corps Volunteers and Peace Corps staff, see handicrafts from around the world, and hear stories from speakers who served as Peace Corps volunteers.     The UW Alumni Association presents the 7th Annual Career Discovery Week, the UW's annual career education and exploration extravaganza for students and alumni!
    From January 23 - 28, Career Discovery Week brings 100-plus special sessions and events covering a wide range of fields to the UW's Bothell, Seattle and Tacoma campuses. Listen to working professionals and alumni share what they do and how they got to where they are. Meet and network with employers at career fairs and in group discussions.     Ethics: A Commitment to Social and Economic Justice
    February 7-8, 2006
    Ethical considerations are at the heart of public service. This course will focus on leadership that is spiritually grounded and courageously committed to social and economic justice. Participants will explore sources of moral courage, ethics, community and opportunities to link a person's capacity for moral reasoning to a commitment to moral action.

    Managing Group Decision Making
    February 15 - 17, 2006
    In the public sector, no less than the private, the pressures of organizational change are ubiquitous. Effective public managers must not only respond to change but lead it. This course is designed to help public managers in local and state government or the nonprofit sector take a strategic approach to leading change in their own or closely affiliated agencies.

    This seminar is designed to assess strengths and talents, and to help you use this information to develop a powerful job search strategy.

    Strategic Marketing In The Public Sector
    March 22-24, 2006
    Though we may not be calling it marketing, most of us working in public sector agencies make decisions and manage programs and people on a daily basis that impact revenues, funding, customer satisfaction, constituent perceptions and public behavior. This two-day course will present a comprehensive overview of the major applications of marketing principles and techniques in the public sector, and the benefits of thinking and acting like a strategic marketer.
