David Harrison to Lead Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program

Dean Sandra Archibald has appointed David Harrison as the new Faculty Coordinator for the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program at the University of Washington. Harrison, a Senior Lecturer, will represent and promote this prestigious program.

"We're privileged to have David lead this program at such a crucial time in world affairs," said Dean Archibald. "His international experience and expansive network with public and nonprofit leaders around the Northwest is a tremendous asset to help the School identify the best possible community assignments for Humphrey Fellows each year."

The UW is one of only 15 universities selected to participate in this nation-wide program, which is supported by the US Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education. Each year, some 12 international midcareer professionals come to the School for seminars and intensive professional development in a variety of careers related to public service. Harrison will be instrumental in developing and sustaining relationships among campus and community members, and the School's past, present and future Humphrey Fellows.

A faculty member at the School since 1986, Harrison's program leadership rests on a wealth of experience. He is highly respected among elected officials, agency heads, community organizations, and UW faculty, staff, and students. He was the founder and former Executive Director of the Northwest Policy Center, former Director of The Forum at the Evans School, is a founding board member of the Community Technology Institute, and currently serves in a governor-appointed position as the Chair of the Washington Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board. In these roles, he has built strong ties between the University and policymakers in Washington and throughout the Northwest. From 2001-2003, he served as a senior policy advisor for Senator Maria Cantwell and continues to assist elected officials in devising strategies for human investment and economic vitality. In 2003, Harrison was honored with a UW Teaching Excellence Award, a testament to his responsiveness and careful guidance of students' research and service learning.

Harrison is a beneficiary and a longtime supporter of international education. He was an exchange student at the University of Sierra Leone in 1968 and later, as Director of the Northwest Policy Center, conducted international field examinations with support from the German Marshall Fund of the United States.
