    We ask for your help in reaching out to newly admitted students for the Fall 2006. During the coming months, we would like each newly admitted student to receive a phone call from an alum to congratulate them on their admission to the School and to answer any questions they may have about your experience at the UW.

    The 11th Annual Washington State Nonprofit Leadership Conference will gather nonprofit CEO's, directors, and board members to explore leadership issues in this sector. Join other leaders from Puget Sound and beyond for workshops, panel discussions, a luncheon plenary, The State of the Nonprofit Sector Report, a Town Hall meeting, student presentations, and the annual Evergreen Awards, followed by a Nonprofit Service Month celebration/reception.

    The Nineveh Gap: Why We Can't Predict Political Responses to Environmental Problems

    The scientific community has spoken clearly and frequently on the catastrophic decline of the human environment, and yet political action often goes directly counter to the recommendations of both natural and social scientists.     Managing the Budget Process
    March 28 - April l
    This course seeks to build managers' and budget officials' abilities and confidence to develop realistic budgets and participate effectively in this policy process. Through case studies, applied exercises, and guest speakers, this course focuses on the practical skills needed to analyze budget information, identify ways to improve service quality and productivity, and effectively communicate with elected officials and the public.

    Creating a Performance-Based Organization
    April 14-15
    Managers in the public and nonprofit sectors, as well as in the private sector, are increasingly responsible for producing results as well as for improving performance. Managers must demonstrate that they not only understand how to create strategic business plans and performance reports, but also that they are able to demonstrate improved "bottom line" results, and ensure that dollars get to their intended destination. Participants will explore how, when, and why these concepts may or may not be usefully applied in the public and nonprofit sectors.

    Career Transitions Workshop
    April 30, 9:00 a.m.
    This workshop is designed to help alumni, students and other members of the UW community sort out the steps required to make a career change or enhance a current position.

    Strategic Management in a Political Environment
    May 2-6
    A difficult task for any manager is working in the gray area at the intersection of political pressures, policy goals, and program operations. This course develops the skills of managers at this critical boundary by focusing on how to think more strategically about the analysis and design of effective policy and the implementation of programs.

    Dependable Strengths Seminars
    May 5 - 7
    This seminar is designed to assess strengths and talents, and to help you use this information to develop a powerful job search strategy.

    Resolving Conflict and Building Consensus
    May 9-13
    Conflict can often be an opportunity for progress and positive change in policies and programs. This course provides managers with concepts and tools for resolving disputes among staff, between jurisdictions, between branches or levels of government, and between organizations, businesses, and citizen groups. Participants develop strategies for building consensus, helping parties move beyond stated positions, and crafting innovative solutions to common problems.
