Behind-the-Scenes Engineering Tour at the Tacoma Narrows Bridge

Please join us for an exclusive tour of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge construction project. The day begins with a box lunch and presentation by notable speakers. The tour takes place on the existing bridge catwalks and will include the main cable procedure, and anchorages for the suspension system, towers and buildings. You may travel to/from UW Seattle by shuttle or join the tour group at the construction site.

When:Friday, October 28, 2005. Shuttle from UW Seattle departs at 10 a.m. If you choose to drive, be at the contruction site by 11:30 a.m.
Where:Shuttle departs from the Burke Museum. Tour begins at the Narrows contruction site in Gig Harbor.

Speakers
We will be hosted by Tom Draeger, Senior VP of Bechtel Group, Inc. and President of Bechtel Construction Operations Incorporated (BCOI), and Scott Steingraber, Tacoma Narrows Constructors Project Engineer. Tacoma Narrows Constructors, a joint venture of Bechtel and Kiewit Pacific, is responsible for carrying out the bridge design and construction project. This fully integrated team of international and local suspension bridge specialists and experts is providing engineering management, procurement, and construction under a design-build, fixed-price, and lump-sum contract with Washington State Department of Transportation.

Attire
VERY IMPORTANT! Attendees must wear long pants and hiking boots or steel-toed shoes above the ankle. Also, must be able to wear a hard hat (provided by the host). Attendees who are not properly attired will not be able to participate.

Transportation Options
Attendees have an option to ride the shuttle or to drive themselves to the construction site. If attendees choose to drive, they should arrive no later than 11:30 a.m. Attendees who choose to ride the shuttle should meet at the main entrance of the Burke Museum on the UW Seattle campus at 10:00 a.m. The shuttle will leave shortly after. The tour lasts until 3:20 p.m. and the bus will return to the UW at approximately 5 p.m.

Location and Directions
Those taking the shuttle should meet at the Burke Museum on the UW Seattle campus. The museum is located on the northwest corner of the University of Washington campus near the corner of 17th Avenue NE and NE 45th Street. Paid parking is available in the large lot next to the museum. See the Burke Museum info page for directions and other information.

Those who drive can meet at the Tacoma Narrows Bridge construction site, 2110 14th Ave NW, Gig Harbor. You can park in the construction office parking lot and then enter the building where you will be greeted by the receptionist.

Directions to site from I-5 or S/R 16 West: Take I-5 north or south to exit #135 for S/R 16 Bremerton. Cross over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Take the 24th Street exit (first exit after the bridge). At the top of the ramp turn right onto 24th St. Turn right onto 14th Ave. NW (at the stop sign). Turn right into the second driveway (there is a sign). If you reach the Glacier batch plant you've gone too far. View a map showing the location.

Lunch Menu
The box lunches include a choice of Deli Specialty Sandwich, salad, fruit, drink, and a cookie. Fresh Deli Specialty Sandwich choices:
1. Turkey, havarti cheese, tomatoes, honey mustard, mayonnaise & lettuce on sourdough bread.
2. Turkey, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, onions, sprouts, mayonnaise & lettuce on whole wheat bread.

4. Turkey, bacon, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, mayonnaise & lettuce on white bread.
5. Ham, Swiss cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, mayonnaise & mustard on rye bread.
6. Ham, cheddar cheese, onions, tomatoes, sprouts, lettuce, honey mustard & mayonnaise on whole wheat bread.
7. Roast beef, havarti cheese, tomatoes, lettuce & mayonnaise on whole wheat bread.
