CFR graduation ceremony in Kane Hall introduced the newest members of the CFR Alumni family

A special ceremony honoring the 153 students earning degrees from the College of Forest Resources in 2004-2005 was held in Kane Hall June 10. Cassie Phillips, BSF '76, JD '82 delivered the keynote address. She emphasized the importance of lifelong learning to the careers of the graduates and the future of forestry worldwide.

UWCFRAA President Ann Forest Burns welcomed the graduates to the CFRAA family. She thanked the graduates and their families for the efforts made in completing their degrees. She urged them to use membership in the UWAA as a way to stay in touch, enrich their careers and give back to the College.

Dean Bare's remarks included inspiring insights into the graduating class.

This year, the overall University's Class of 2005 totals 11,990 undergraduate and graduate students from the Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma campuses. 153 students fulfilled requirements for undergraduate and graduate degrees from the College of Forest Resources. Of these 153 graduates, 53% were undergraduates. Fifty-seven students earned the Master of Science or Master of Forest Resources. Twelve earned a Doctor of Philosophy.

The University also allows undergraduate students to receive two degrees from two different Colleges by earning 225 credits. One undergraduate degree is 180 credits. This year, eight students received double degrees, partnering with Botany, Chemical Engineering, Community and Environmental Planning, Psychology and the Program on the Environment. Two students received double majors from the College, one in Forest Management with Conservation of Wildland Resources, and one in Wildlife Science with Conservation of Wildland Resources. Students can also receive minors in various programs throughout the University by completing a minimum of 25 credits. Thirteen CFR students also completed UW minors. Twelve majors from programs such as Art, Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, Biology, Earth and Space Sciences, Japanese, Linguistics, and Landscape Architecture earned College of Forest Resources minors to to complement their major by expanding their knowledge of natural resources and environmental science.

For the class of 2005, about 700 University undergraduates (or about 10% of the undergraduate graduating class) received "laude" honors, which means that those students have achieved an outstanding overall grade point average. Eight CFR undergraduates were in this group:

  • Cum Laude (minimum gpa of 3.73): Randi Adair; Benjamin Brigham; Daniel Boudreaux; Samantha Martin; and Brian Spradlin.
  • Magna Cum Laude (a minimum gpa of 3.85): Jed Matson
  • Summa Cum Laude means a minimum gpa of 3.90: Angela Steel and Carrie Spradlin.

Following the Kane Hall ceremony, graduates, faculty, family and friends attended a reception in Anderson Hall sponsored by the CFR Alumni Association.
