Washington Pulp and Paper Foundation Thirty-Sixth Annual Conference, May 25
A gorgeous spring day on the University of Washington campus greeted about 120 participants for the Annual Conference of the Washington Pulp and Paper Foundation. Attendees migrated from the Forest Club Room, to Bloedel Hall, and finally to the University Club.
Special events were: Luncheon and Annual Membership Meeting; Student Poster Session; Pilot Paper Machine Demonstration; Reception, Banquet and Evening Address.
Bruce Bare observed during the Membership Meeting that both of his bosses were in attendance: University President Mark Emmert and Acting Provost David Thorud. President Emmert acknowledged the strength and importance of the partnership that exists between the University, the College of Forest Resources, the Foundation and the Paper Science and Engineering program.
The evening keynote speaker, Kathy Buckman Gibson, Chairman of the Board for Buckman Laboratories, challenged and advised our students: "You are the talent this industry needs if it is to move forward in a highly competitive world..."
Special Recognition was given to UWCFRAA Treasurer Tom Friberg as recipient of the Foundation's first Outstanding Alumni Award (Bachelor of Science degrees in Forest Resources and Pulp and Paper Science in 1970; Doctorate in Forest Resources in 1976). The award recognizes outstanding contributions in time, talent and financial support to insure excellence in education in the Paper Science and Engineering Program. Tom's many time and talent contributions plus his founding of the Thomas Swen Friberg Endowed Fund for Student Support, exemplify exceptional levels of "giving back."
